Jimmy Choo has hired Elisabeth Murdoch, the daughter of Rupert Murdoch, as a non-executive director.

The upmarket shoe company, which joined the stock market last year, said Murdoch would join the board immediately. It described her as a leading media and technology executive and entrepreneur.

Murdoch’s appointment brings together a coveted women’s fashion brand and one of the most influential women in the UK media. Jimmy Choo shoes, known for their towering heels, sell for up to £600 a pair and were made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker in the TV series Sex and the City.

Peter Harf, Jimmy Choo’s chairman, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Elisabeth to the board of Jimmy Choo as she brings a wealth of experience.”

Murdoch, 47, chairs Freelands group, which invests in technology companies, and is a trustee of Tate galleries. In 2001, she launched the television production company Shine, whose hits included MasterChef, and sold it to her father’s 21st Century Fox 10 years later for £415m.

Murdoch stood down as chairman of Shine at the start of this year when 21st Century Fox merged it with two other production companies. Before starting Shine, she worked at BSkyB, the satellite TV group controlled by her father’s company, and media businesses in the US.
