News Corporation chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch took a 14% pay cut in the year to the end of June, but still netted a total remuneration package of $27.5m (£14.7m).

Murdoch's pay package, which was affected by a change in the company's accounting practices, included a base salary of $8.1m, bonuses and other benefits totalling $17.5m and shares worth $1.54m, the company said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

His right-hand man Peter Chernin, the News Corp chief operating officer, took home $28.8m, down from $34m in the previous year.

The Fox News boss, Roger Ailes, netted a total package of $19.9m, including a $4.5m performance bonus.

Ailes was responsible for the launch of the Fox Business channel in the US in late 2007.
